He actually hates the idea of 'starcraft, part two' - as he doubts they'll be able not to fuck it up. I somehow share that sentiment to be honest. Would be hugely amazed if SC2 turns out to be better than it's successor.

Don't get me wrong, i'm still looking forward to this a LOT - but the fact that Bill Roper departed Blizzard ages ago kinda makes me worried. Plus the fact that WC3 didn't even come close to the greatness which was SC :p

Been saying this for ages: just give me an updated Starcraft (WC3 engine, both graphics and interface-wise) and i'll be a very, very happy man :p

Wether you want or aim to as a developer or not, you will be competing with the massive pop culture and consumer base that still thrives in regular Starcraft.

I understand that adding a fourth faction falls into the Bigger-and-Better category but really... seems like Marketing-think.
Seeing how Blizzard handles development iterations and handles customer feedback in World of Warcraft makes me think that giant ball of red tape is hopelessly stuck with their own (or EA's) procedures and stuck up bureaucracy which lacks freefloating Gamer/Designers with heart for the good stuff.

Got any links to interviews/articles on Olsen and Roper and SC2?

With almost any other gameseries I'd agree with you. But I don't think they want to lose the korean proffessional league. They want to convert them. And to do that they need to develop a fast-paced, wellbalanced game. I could be wrong, but it'd surprise me if I where.

Funny how those random forumposts end up claiming they're official without any evidence at all to back it up.
Granted I don't read korean so I can't prove it's not fake but to get a post approved for the EvAv news forum you gotta link to other more official sources, which it seems they have? In any case. If it's true we only gotta wait about 3 weeks to find oiut. ;P

Not sure btw, but I do believe the two key persons involved with RTS design for WC1 to 3 and StarCraft that were mentioned in this thread have left Blizzard after WC3.

So I'm really curious to where they voices their opinion as Kibs mentioned ;)
Would be a nice read regardless what their opinion would be.

I recall that translated article - it's referenced from the original link at the top of this thread.
MBC Game's Lee Sang-Ho head said "Frankly, it's half anticipation and half worry. If SC2 is released in a form that is compatible with e-sports broadcast, there will be many new gamers and the entire industry will develop. However if it comes out in a form that is not easy to broadcast, like WarCraft 3, StarCraft fans will focus on the sequel while the original league will suffer a decline", expressing a cautious mindset.
If if.
Have no clue why Starcraft became the bomb.
Did it have such good broadcasting mechanisms or did a handful of the, what, 19 million South Koreans that play the game develop a proxy for that?

Im not sure tbh i dont know that much about games other than blizzard games but i played a few strategy games back then and when i started with SC it was like no other.. hell of a tempo.. ranking systems etc. And very very well balanced.. games lasted like 20-30 mins and they were very funny..

Think Late is on the right track with the balance, that has never been seen in a strategy game before, and WC3 wasnt even close in comparison
