Have no clue why Starcraft became the bomb.
Did it have such good broadcasting mechanisms or did a handful of the, what, 19 million South Koreans that play the game develop a proxy for that?
Several reason:
1. The balance was damn near perfect. Not bullshitting you, balance in the original starcraft was 99% perfect.
2. It had the typical Blizzard touch, which sells 5 million copies by it's own.
3. It was the first RTS to really offer 3 completely different races, instead of just swapping out 90% of the units like the competition did. Which started the whole 'multi-race' buzz.
4. Because it was a damn good game - and it still is.
As i said before - Starcraft was the brainchild of Bill Roper, who left Blizzard even before WC3 got released. As far as i know he departed with a bunch of other Blizzard talent and founded Flagship studios (Hellgate London) - and worked as a consultant on the piece of shit RTS aspect of Black and White 2. Don't think you'll find much interviews of him 'voicing' his opinion, as Blizzard developers are known to be pretty silent

That's not counting the EQ trash that's now in charge of WoW's raiding design.
I'm pretty sure Blizzard still has enough talent left to pull off another awesome RTS - but i very much doubt they'll succeed in creating 'another' Starcraft without Roper. Giving him too much credit? Maybe. I might be wrong ofcourse, but seeing how Rob Pardo handled Warcraft 3 - it doesn't give me much hope. But that's another discussion
