CoE / CoS Resistance calculations.

Post by Lateralus »

People keep pulling numbers out of their ass about how CoS/CoE were nerfed 13,75%, 18,75%, 15%, 20% or whatever other random number they can think of.

The old CoS added 18,75% on average. No, not 15%. Not 20%. 18,75%. That's how the math works, you see.

The new CoS adds 5% on a 0 resistance target. We'll assume these still exist and that some people have trouble beating them.

That's 118,75% total damage with old CoS, 105% with new.

The difference, ladies and gentlemen:

(1-(105/118,75))*100% = 11,5789%

An 11,6% nerf on targets with 0 resistance.

Now, let's find the magical border at which the old and the new version are equally good.

We know that the old version is 118,75% total damage. The new version is x%*1.05 total damage.

x*1.05=118,75 <=> 113,095

This means they're equally good when the new version reduces target resistance by 13,096%. Simple math reveals how much resistance is required to reduce by that amount: (Assuming level 60)
13,096 * 4 = 52,384

To sum up:
On targets with 0 resistances, it's an 11,6% reduction in damage.
On targets with 52,384 (or 52) resistance, it's a tie.
On targets with 75 resistances, it's a 5% boost.
On targets with any resistance, using Binary spells (Frostbolt and Blastwave for example), it's a 5% boost.

Thanks for no longer using arbitrary numbers!

i think the change for those two skills is long overdue.. And i believe that the new CoS & CoE wont be near as powerfull as they were before.
